WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Spring was cold and prolonged. Negative temperatures at night and day temperatures below +5^C retained till mid June. Snow still covered about 2% of tundra surface in the end of the thrid week of June, while some small lakes remained ice-covered. Pechora R. bay became ice-free on 21 June. Greening of vegetation was delayed 3 weeks, acoording to our data from 5 previous seasons. Late June and early July were cold (daily mean temperatures below +12^C), with frequent rains and strong winds. According to report of Y.N.Mineev mean daily temperatures in the second half of summer were also below average, weather remained rainy and windy, which affected unfavourably survival and reproductive success of most tundra birds.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity: rainy
Date of 50% snow-cover:
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow: late June

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Fox increased in numbers judging by occupation of all dens in vicinities. Snowy Owls (non-breeding), Arctic Skuas and gulls were common, like in 1995.
Most of the common wader species (Red-necked Phalarope, Temmink's Stint, Little Stint, Ruff, and Dunlin) had full clutches in the beginning of incubation, but exhibited reduction of size later. Less common than in 1995 were Ringed Plover and Grey Plover. In the beginning of the second week of July nearly half of controlled Temmink's Stint nests were lost, presumably, due to predation by Arctic Skuas, Arctic Foxes, and very bad weather. Hatching was recorded in Grey Plovers.

Rodent dynamics:

Numbers of Siberian Lemming remained low, although for the first time in 6 years many winter tracks of this species and the Root Vole were recorded.
